While many people do see good results, there’s also a surprising risk you might not hear much about: laser treatments can sometimes stimulate more hair growth instead of reducing it. It’s rare, but it does happen — even if you seem like the perfect candidate. So, why does this happen?
Paradoxical hypertrichosis: when laser backfires
This phenomenon is called paradoxical hypertrichosis — and yes, the name alone sounds intimidating. While researchers aren’t exactly sure why it occurs, we do know that in some cases, laser treatments can cause hair to grow back thicker and darker instead of disappearing. Let’s take a look at why this might happen.
Laser settings and skin assessment matter more than you think
One explanation relates to the temperature needed to properly treat a hair follicle. Laser needs to heat the hair to about 65 degrees Celsius to destroy the follicle’s germ cells. If the heat falls short — say around 45 degrees — it may actually stimulate new hair growth instead. So not only do those dark hairs run the risk of getting darker, it can make your peach fuzz black and thick.
This is where experience and technique really matter. A good laser technician needs to do two things every session:
Accurately match the laser settings to your skin type, and

Unfortunately, these steps don’t always happen. Sometimes the laser is intentionally set lower to make sessions less painful, but that can leave follicles partially treated.
